Academic Background:
Ph.D. Marine Science, Virginia Institute of Marine Studies, College of William and Mary
B.S. Geology/Oceanography, Duke University
Fulbright University of Sydney
Postdoc Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and U.S. Geological Survey
Current Area of Interest:
My interests are in the observation and modeling of coastal morphodynamics, the morphological interplay of hydrodynamics (waves and currents) with sediment and seabed features (morphology). Additional interests include beach morphology and nourishment practices, decadal-scale coastal behavior, barrier island morphology and storm response, scour processes, oceanographic observing systems, and the use and development of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
Why did you sign up for the cruise?
I was the Chief Scientist for this workshop, tasked with educating the participants on what is involved in being the Chief Scientist. This included science mission planning, logistics for working with the crew, time management principles, technological considerations when performing science at sea, and mentoring the scientists on board.
What did you learn?
I learned a great deal on this cruise. The attendees came from various backgrounds, some arrived with autonomous underwater vehicles to deploy and others came to learn more about performing science at sea with robots from a research vessel.
