Allison Smith is a data science postdoctoral fellow in the School of Oceanography and the eScience Institute at the University of Washington. Allison received her Ph.D.in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina and was a postdoctoral researcher in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University before coming to the University of Washington. Her research focuses on understanding and predicting the distribution of species in coastal and open ocean ecosystems. In the course of her research, she uses and develops mechanistic models of organisms and ecosystems that incorporate physiology, chemistry, and physics. Results from her research will help determine the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems. She has additional interests in reproducibility and data visualization.  On the cruise, she will be analyzing ADCP data while underway to determine the depth the deep scattering layer to help select depths for nutrient sampling.
